Welcome to the web site of the Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh; we meet every Tuesday evening - subject to occasional scatter visits - at the Senior Common Room, Reading University. Our meetings start at 8pm and our President always looks forward to welcoming our visitors from 7:30pm in the bar. What is Rotary - Founded in 1905 Rotary is an international voluntary organisation consisting of over 1.2 million men and women worldwide who co-operate as a global team to alleviate or resolve suffering, hardship and deprivation regardless of race, religion, culture or political inclination. Complementing this commitment to local, national and international service, Rotarians live by a code of high ethical standards and carry the creed of international goodwill and peace throughout all aspects of their personal, business and community lives.
As for Reading Maiden Erlegh - The Club
was formed in September 1988 and its Charter was presented on 16th
May 1989; it is We provide help - both financial and physical - to charities and other organisations that benefit local people as well as disabled or disadvantaged individuals who need assistance that is not provided by the normal channels. As a general rule this support is available to any organisation or individual in the Thames Valley, however we do give some preference to the needs within our local area of Woodley, Earley, Lower Earley and Sonning. In addition to supporting local charities, good causes, individuals and communities - click here for examples - we are also involved with international projects. For example the Karun Orphanage in Tamilnadu India which was formed by the father of a local Rotarian and where we have provided new dormitories, wash rooms, improved classrooms and computer systems for the children. The second project is in Ukerewe, Tanzania where we are joining with other Rotary Clubs to improve hygiene and educational facilities for the local community. In both instances Reading Maiden Erlegh has provided a variety of material resources, professional expertise and travel to each location to personally deliver hands-on assistance. Pay us a visit - If you would like to visit our Rotary Club one evening - even if you are not a Rotarian - or just want to find out more about Rotary in general, simply complete our feedback form and we will have someone contact you. |
