Foundation

The Rotary Foundation is Rotary's own charity. Founded in 1917, it is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

The Foundation runs many programmes, including sponsoring scholars to study peace and conflict resolution and providing grants to support Rotarians in their charity work. The six main areas of focus for Foundation are currently:

  • Peace and conflict resolution
  • Disease prevention and treatment
  • Water and sanitation
  • Maternal and child health
  • Basic education and literacy
  • Economic and community development

Foundation is perhaps best known for End Polio, in which it has spearheaded the drive to eradicate polio from the world. Started in 1985, Polio Plus (now known as End Polio) was the first and largest internationally coordinated private-sector support of a public health initiative.

Our club and many of its members are regular contributors to Rotary Foundation.
