Jointly with other clubs in the UK and Sweden we were involved in a project on Ukerewe, the largest inhabited island in Lake Victoria in Tanzania, with a population of 350,000. Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in Africa and Ukerewe, while being typical of many rural Tanzanian communities, is particularly isolated and disempowered. The biggest town, Nansio, is a 3.5 hour ferry journey from the mainland. The project is a broad ranging venture including work in the areas of water and sanitation, education, health/hospital schemes, literacy and vocational training. At the heart of the scheme are proposals to boost local economic activity.
